Avril In Wonderland

Variety.com has revealed that Avril Lavigne is set to release Alice (Underground) as the lead single from her forthcoming fourth album which she has described as very introspective and stripped down. Alice (Underground) will also serve as the soundtrack single from Tim Burton’s upcoming Disney film Alice In Wonderland.

Variety.com mentions:

Much like penning the opening song for a James Bond film, top-shelf performers savor the opportunity to write a Disney tune. In March, the studio will throw its weight behind Avril Lavigne’s Alice (Underground) from Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.

In a recent interview Avril described her upcoming record:

I started this record off really slow, just writing songs at home on my piano. I didn’t work with a ton of people this time. This record, I just really, really wanted to sing. We started recording each song, some of them, just with acoustic guitar and the vocal and building it from there. It’s stripped down. I love performing that way, so I really felt like it was time to make a record like that. To just make it all about the vocal and the performance, and the vibe, and the emotion.

Alice (Underground) is set for release on March 5th through RCA Records.

We blogged about this song few weeks ago just after the release of Timbaland’s third album Shock Value 2. Timbaland’s duet with Katy Perry, If We Ever Meet Again, is now set for a single release. The video was shot in December and the single is pencilled in for a February 15th release in the UK.

Timbaland said in a recent interview with MTV:

When I did this song, I was in love with this record called … you’re gonna be surprised. The record didn’t have anything to do with [If We Ever Meet Again], but when I heard I Gotta Feeling, I said, “I want a record just like that on my album”. I said, “I gotta do me a I Gotta Feeling record”. Me and one of my producers, Jim Beanz, we came up with this concept. I said, [I Gotta Feeling] is happy, but I like it.’ It gives a good feeling.

Get ready to hear If We Ever Meet Again played to death for months in every club following its February 15th release.

Sophie Ellis Bextor’s lead single from her forthcoming album is entitled Bittersweet as announced by Sophie herself via her Twitter account today. Bittersweet sees Sophie teaming up with previous collaborators Freemasons as well as Hannah Robinson and Biff Stannard.

Sophie described the song’s meaning as:

…when you can’t resist something that you know is bad for you. a guilty pleasure. like watching celebrity big brother.

On her official blog she added:

It’s a good introduction to the fourth album because, as with the majority of the record, it’s a song you can dance to. The new tracks feature collaborations with Calvin Harris, Metronomy, Cathy Dennis, Richard X and Edrcourt. It’s been a lovely experience to make this album and I am so looking forward to sharing it with you all.

Bittersweet will be sent to radio in February with a scheduled early April release followed by the yet to be titled new album through Fascination.

Our first hint of confirmation about Rachel Stevens’ return to music was a few weeks ago when her record label Fascination, though she was never officially transfered to the label, tweeted:

Rachel Stevens just popped by Fascination Towers for a visit…she looks INCREDIBLE…better than ever before!

Rachel then officially confirmed the news herself via her official forum stating in her latest update:

Some of you may have read in a couple of the papers that I’m getting back into music, it’s very early stages at the moment but I’m going into the studio in the new year… all very exciting! I’ll keep you all posted with what’s going on.

Let’s hope she has the sense to recreate and mature her sound from 2005’s masterpiece Come And Get It.

Top 100 Songs of 2009

2009 has seen some great music released. For the past few weeks I’ve been working on a list of what I think are the top 100 songs of 2009. Songs have been moved up and down the list and removed completely but I’ve finally come up with a list that I’m happy with.

I’m sure there’s a few songs and chart positions that will surprise people, especially the top 10. The song I chose as number 1 is a song that got a lot of bad press this year but regardless, I do think it’s by far the best song of the year.
